Advancing neuromuscular science: the World Muscle Society 30th anniversary congress in Vienna
A landmark edition of the WMS Congress
The WMS Annual Congress is widely regarded as the premier international meeting for the neuromuscular field. Its 30th anniversary edition in the Austria Center Vienna promises not only a cutting-edge scientific program - with plenary lectures, symposia, poster sessions, and short oral presentations - but also unique celebratory moments marking this important milestone. More than ever, WMS 2025 will combine scientific innovation with sustainability, inclusivity, and community engagement -ensuring that the impact of the Congress resonates far beyond the days of the event itself.

Sustainability and responsibility at the core
The WMS Environmental Sustainability Committee has developed a comprehensive strategy to make the 2025 Congress the most sustainable and inclusive yet. Initiatives include reducing printed materials, minimizing food waste, hosting meat-free and vegan menu days, and collaborating with local suppliers. Delegates are encouraged to bring reusable items such as water bottles and lanyards, further reducing environmental impact.
The scientific program itself also reflects this commitment: WMS 2025 will feature sustainability-focused posters under three thematic areas - sustainable medical technologies for the treatment of muscular disorders, eco-friendly rehabilitation and research methods, and the impact of environmental factors on musculoskeletal health.
Legacy initiatives: giving back to the community
For the third consecutive year, the WMS will donate £10,000 to local charities chosen by the Local Organising Committee. Congress participants will have the opportunity to vote on the allocation of funds among four impactful causes:
- Austrian Powerchair Football National Team - enabling inclusive sports for people with severe disabilities.
- Marathon - Association for Children with Muscular Diseases - supporting therapeutic treatment and family assistance.
- Austrian Muscle Research - advancing scientific projects to improve care and quality of life.
- SMA Austria - representing and supporting people living with spinal muscular atrophy.
This initiative highlights the Society's long-term vision: creating a positive impact not only in science but also in the host community.
An inclusive congress experience
WMS 2025 will offer a welcoming and accessible environment for all delegates. A dedicated family-friendly room at the Austria Center Vienna will provide space for parents and children to relax together, complete with child-friendly activities and a live stream of the scientific sessions. Attendees of all faiths will have access to a multi-faith room, while those seeking a calming retreat during the intensity of the congress days can make use of a quiet room designed for rest and reflection. To ensure accessibility for an even wider audience, the Congress will also provide live translation services through Wordly, allowing participants to follow presentations in their preferred language.
