ECR 2026 transformed Vienna into an immersive world of radiology

A record-breaking gathering of the global radiology community

From March 04-08, Vienna welcomed the international radiology community for one of the world's leading medical congresses. The European Society of Radiology (ESR) held its annual European Congress of Radiology (ECR) which attracted a record 22,418 participants from 121 countries - an increase of over 9% compared to the previous year - alongside more than 220 industry exhibitors.

As one of the largest medical meetings in Europe and the second-largest radiology congress worldwide, ECR brings together professionals from across the field, including radiologists, radiographers, physicists, industry leaders and media representatives. Beyond its scientific relevance, the congress also generates significant economic impact for Vienna, contributing to hospitality, mobility and the city's global visibility.

"Rays of Knowledge": an immersive congress experience

Under the 2026 theme "Rays of Knowledge", the Austria Center Vienna was transformed into a fully immersive environment inspired by classical antiquity. Marble-style architecture, statues and ancient motifs created a distinctive setting where scientific exchange became a multisensory experience.

High-quality, cinematic content and spatial design elements turned knowledge transfer into something tangible and engaging, demonstrating how modern congress formats can go beyond traditional presentations. The result was a congress experience where learning, networking and inspiration seamlessly merged.

Scientific excellence and key highlights

Education and scientific exchange remained at the core of ECR 2026. A series of high-profile plenary sessions addressed key developments shaping the future of radiology, offering insights into emerging technologies, clinical practice and interdisciplinary perspectives.
Artificial intelligence continued to be a central theme throughout the program, with dedicated formats such as the AI Theatre and "Pixel Pandemonium", as well as practical sessions on clinical applications.

Interventional radiology also featured prominently, with new technologies presented in dedicated formats. New session types further expanded the program by introducing interdisciplinary perspectives and more practice-oriented approaches.
Interactive elements added an engaging dimension to the scientific program, encouraging active participation and exchange among attendees.

Networking and social highlights across the city

Beyond the scientific program, ECR 2026 offered a wide range of networking opportunities and social events across Vienna. Highlights included the Radiographer Evening and the highly popular Palace Party at the HOFBURG Vienna, where performances, music and immersive staging created a memorable experience for attendees.

The Opening Ceremony "LIGHT" set the tone for the congress, featuring internationally renowned artists and combining music, performance and visual storytelling into a spectacular launch event.

A focus on sustainability

Sustainability remained a key priority for the congress. Participants were encouraged to travel to Vienna using more environmentally responsible options, including discounted rail tickets and public transport solutions such as the City Airport Train (CAT). These measures reflect the ongoing efforts to make large-scale international meetings more sustainable.

Looking ahead: ECR 2027

The next edition of the European Congress of Radiology will take place in Vienna from March 3-7, 2027 under the slogan "Healthcare Reimagined".
